About Tooth Extractions

While the board-certified doctors of MINT dentistry focus on saving and preserving your teeth, you may still need a dental extraction. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible above the gumline. This is generally used for a tooth that is damaged or decayed beyond repair. A surgical extraction removes a tooth or teeth that haven't erupted above the gumline. Surgical extractions are commonly used to remove the wisdom teeth and impacted teeth that do not have enough room to fit into your smile. Whatever the reason is for a dental extraction, MINT dentistry's team will give you excellent care. Our office in Denton, TX offers several sedation methods, like nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, so you remain comfortable during your procedure. Contact our team for more information or to schedule an exam to help us determine if you need one or more teeth extracted.

Best Candidates

If your tooth has been damaged or broken, we will try to restore it with a filling or crown. However, if these efforts are unsuccessful or the damage is too severe, you may be a candidate for tooth extraction. A dental extraction can also be performed to remove teeth that cannot fit in your mouth. This includes your third molars, generally known as wisdom teeth, which develop around the ages of 17 – 21 years old. In older children, baby teeth may need to be extracted if they have not fallen out naturally so the permanent teeth can erupt. If you are getting an orthodontic treatment, like traditional metal braces or Invisalign®, an extraction may be needed to make room for others as they move into alignment.

What to Expect

Tooth extractions are performed in our state-of-the-art facility under anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Any additional sedation will depend on the extent of the procedure and to help if you have dental fears or anxieties. Before the procedure begins, you will be allowed a few moments to relax in a luxurious treatment chair within the procedure room. When you are ready, we will begin the extraction. For a simple extraction, one of our highly qualified dentists will use advanced techniques and cutting-edge tools to gently remove the tooth. A surgical extraction will begin with a MINT dentist making incisions in your gums to the tooth. If needed, the tooth may be broken into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove. Once the tooth is removed, we will finish by closing the incision.

Treatment Aftercare

Based on the type of sedation used during your dental extraction, you may need to ask a responsible adult to pick you up and take you home. Your dentist will provide you with specific instructions to speed your recovery. Your instructions will vary depending on the complexity of your dental extraction, but most patients prefer to eat soft, cool food for the first few days after the extraction. Inflammation is common after an extraction, so we recommend cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication. When appropriate, we may write you a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics. In addition to any suggested follow-up appointments, you should continue to schedule twice yearly professional cleanings at MINT dentistry in Denton, TX, so our team can continue to monitor and improve your oral health.

The MINT Commitment

A dental extraction is generally covered in part by dental insurance; however, coverage for sedation will vary. After your cosultation, we will speak to your insurance company to understand your specific coverage and estimate your out-of-pocket costs. If you don't have insurance, we can help you understand how to better afford your care with the MINT Discount Plan, low-interest medical financing, and accepting many payment methods.
